10 Video Game Spin-Offs BETTER Than The Main Franchise
7. World Of Warcraft
Blizzard Entertainment’s early efforts with Warcraft: Orcs & Humans helped define real-time strategy games as we know it. Released back in 1994, it became widely praised for its universe, gameplay design and multiplayer capabilities.
Following on from two successful sequels, Blizzard began taking note of MMORPGs, which had seen a significant rise in development after the turn of the millennium. Phantasy Star Online, Final Fantasy XI and Eve Online, all big contenders on the scene but Eve aside, few had the lasting impact that World of Warcraft still maintains.
Like many titles listed here, it’s one which scarcely needs an introduction, having dominated the MMORPG scene since it launched in 2004, set within Azeroth and taking place four years after Warcraft III.
It still holds millions of subscribers to this day, a feat backed by Blizzard’s continued commitment to new expansions with Shadowlands due for release this year.
Warcraft III might still retain a loyal player base but, having earned Blizzard over $9.3 billion in revenue, there’s no question that WoW surpassed the original trilogy.
