10 Video Game Spin-Offs BETTER Than The Main Franchise
3. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
Far Cry 3 turned the series into one of Ubisoft’s big blockbuster
franchises, reaching 10 million sales. Set on the fictional Rook Islands, you
played as Jason Brody, trying to save his friends after they’ve been kidnapped
by pirates, escaping from the island and its unhinged residents.
So when Ubisoft announced a retro-futuristic expansion they
described as “an 80s VHS vision of the future” with neon visuals, it was
surprising to say the very least.
Initially revealed by an April Fools day teaser trailer, Blood Dragon released half a year later and was a stand-alone experience, not requiring the original game to play. Set within an alternative 2007, you played as cybernetic super-soldier Sgt Rex “Power” Colt in the aftermath of a nuclear war.
Maintaining the same gameplay mechanics as FC3, it’s a
parody of 80s action films that proved utterly ridiculous, completely
captivating and full of charm in a way the main game couldn’t achieve.
