10 Video Game Spin-Offs That Surpass The Original
5. World Of Warcraft (Warcraft)
Contrary to what some believe, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans wasn't the first multiplayer game to rely on real-time strategy.
However, it did help popularise the genre, to the point where many RTS games imitated its structure and mechanics. Even though the sequels maintained a steady standard, it looked like Warcraft wasn't going to redefine the genre a second time.
Oh, how wrong we were. Though the original Warcraft series could be played offline, everything shifted when Blizzard turned 2004's World of Warcraft into a pure MMORPG. The mammoth-sized game expanded in every department possible, offering more varied quests, PvP battles, dungeons, raids, and boss battles.
Not only was the world bigger than ever, downtime and loading screens were kept to a minimum, keeping players immersed. Though grinding is a common problem in the best RPGs, the diversity in WoW's quests made this issue practically non-existent. With this world teeming with boundless content, WoW didn't just give RTS games a good shake-up - it revolutionised the entire industry.
World of Warcraft's best days may be behind it, but it doesn't change the fact it was a gaming juggernaut for over a decade, blowing the original out of the water.
