10 Video Game Spin-Offs That Surpass The Original
4. Pokémon Legends: Arceus (Pokémon)
Pokemon Red/Blue wasn't just a success, but a global phenomenon. The dual RPGs kicked off a monster franchise (literally) that's collectively sold more units than Super Mario, which is a first for Nintendo.
Having said that, the later instalments have suffered heavy scrutiny for their glitches, lack of content, and the fact they're still following the same formula after 25 years.
For this reason, it was a breath of fresh air when Game Freak released Pokemon Legends: Arceus in 2022. Preserving the core gameplay of the mainstream titles, the Switch exclusive's immense open-world offered players an unprecedented level of freedom.
Although the last two Pokemon Gens were criticised for their underwhelming graphics, Arceus was championed for its luscious art style. Many integral mechanics were refined, including catching and battling the titular critters.
The transitions from the Pokemon battles back into the open-world is seamless now, since it isn't constantly interrupted by experience points breakdowns and Pokemon levelling up, learning moves, or evolving.
Basically, Arceus gave fans the Pokemon experience they always craved and deserved. With the recent Gen series dwindling in quality, Pokemon Legends could become the definitive Pokemon franchise if Game Freak continue down this path.
