10 Video Game Sub-Bosses With Unexpected Second Phases

5. Gooper Blooper - Super Mario Sunshine (2002)

Gooper Blooper is an enemy that is fought three times in total throughout Super Mario Sunshine: twice in Ricco Harbor, and one in the elusive region of Noki Bay. While the Ricco Harbor encounters both present him as a bona fide boss, the Noki Bay encounter does not - which is curious.

He appears in the area's second stage and is fought after Mario scales the entire wall of moving ruins built into the cliff face. Once you get up there, the fight is identical to the previous ones...except it isn't, because the music that plays is the track you normally associate with smaller-scale threats.

So, then, you'd probably expect this to be a watered-down version of the true Gooper Blooper boss, with limited moves and health. But no, it's exactly the same. After ripping off all of its tentacles (or just the front two if you live life on the edge), the force of pulling the cork out of Gooper Blooper's mouth smacks him flat on the ground.

Until he gets back up, his tentacles regrown and deadly sludge squirting out of its mouth.

Since there's no real ceremony about this 'boss' encounter, it's surprising that the encounter still has this second phase. In any case, it's not hard to clear away the goop and send the slippery squid flying back into the water.
