10 Video Game Trailers That Lied To Us (But Were Still Awesome)

8. Gears of War

Dead Island
Epic Games

Gears of War is a futuristic action shooter overflowing with 'roided up meatheads, machismo-filled dialogue, and chainsaw guns.

But when Epic Games' series was revealed back in 2006, people thought it was something else entirely. To be fair, the trailer doesn't hide the elements which the franchise is renowned for. Disproportionately large guns. Check. Ugly aliens. Check. A soldier whose bulky physique defies the laws of human anatomy. Check.

However, the teaser gives off a completely different vibe. The fact Mad World plays throughout gives the false impression GoW is an emotional charged survivor-horror, drenched in palpable tension. The trailer only highlights one human character, erroneously indicating our beefy hero will face this cosmic threat alone.

Contrary to what was sold, GoW is an over-the-top shooter that focuses less on invoking emotions, and more on blasting oversized holes in extra-terrestrials' faces. Interestingly, this trailer would've been better suited for the sequels, since the later instalments humanise the ensemble, offering a more personal experience.

Although the trailer misrepresented the property, it didn't stop Gears of War from becoming one of Microsoft's most successful brands for nearly two decades.
