10 Video Game Trailers That Lied To Us (But Were Still Awesome)

7. Assassin's Creed

Dead Island
Ubisoft

Based on the first Assassin Creed's trailer, the Ubisoft IP looked like a historic hack-and-slash which had the player utilise stealth and parkour to eliminate his targets.

Although this assessment is accurate, there's one key element which the promotions neglected to mention. Shortly after booting up the game, players were confused to learn Assassin's Creed takes place in the modern day. Not only that, the narrative centres around genetic memories, futuristic simulations, cosmic artefacts, and yes, even aliens. Even though the glitchy effects in the trailer hinted there was more going on than meets the eye, few picked up on their significance.

With the benefit of hindsight, it was a wise decision to keep this sub-plot hidden, since it would've been too convoluted to condense it in a concise trailer. (Also, it was a nice surprise for players when they realised Assassin's Creed was secretly a sci-fi title.) Not only did this undisclosed plotline fail to hinder the experience, it improved upon it, since it offered a much deeper narrative than advertised.

Even if this sub-plot didn't work, Assassin's Creed would've stood on its own merits, due to the fluid combat, phenomenal world-building, addictive parkour sections, and exceptional stealth mechanics.
