10 Video Game Trailers That Spoiled WAY Too Much
4. The Horror Twist - MiSide
MiSide is one of the most memorable games of the past year, revolving around a protagonist who is transported into a social simulation app called MiSide, where they find themselves interacting with the app's female mascot character Mita.
Yet MiSide's colourful visuals and chirpy tone belie the fact that it's actually pulling a Doki Doki Literature Club! - that is to say, there's a turning point early on in which MiSide morphs into a horror game, as you realise nothing about Mita is what it seems.
It's a great twist for anyone who goes into the game blind or simply picked it up on a whim after observing the cute visuals, but MiSide's trailers pretty blatantly gave away the genre shift, leaving little room for players to experience it sight unseen.
While on one hand there's something to be said for not misleading people, and marketing the game as a purely cute visual novel might've caused a whole ton of people to demand refunds, it also would've been one hell of a rug-pull if we all had no inkling of what was coming.
Doki Doki Literature Club! likely only managed to pull this off because it was originally a free-to-play game, where deceiving players presented no financial risk whatsoever.
