10 Video Game Trends We Wish Would Disappear

1. First Day DLC / Pre-Order Bonuses

1-PreOrder

Paid downloadable content in general has already appeared on this list, but first day DLC is a completely different beast, because unlike DLC released six months after the original release it isn't created to keep you playing, it's designed to get you paying extra from the very first day. The most galling thing about first day DLC is that it was completed at the same time as the main game, by many of the same developers, and before the Internet would've been part of the game. My first encounter with First Day DLC was "From Ashes", the Mass Effect 3 extra content that added a new mission, a new team-mate, and some additional backstory on the Protheans, content which despite my initial investment has never seemed to work despite many attempts to re-download and reinstall etc. First Day DLC is particularly galling because unlike later DLC it was developed to completion alongside the game you've just paid at least £30 for and other than money making reasons, it has no excuse not to be part of the original game. In the same vein pre-order bonuses are effectively retailer-exclusive first day DLC, with the added difference that it doesn't cost the gamer any extra money. Even more annoying is that if you don't pre-order, your £40 is effectively buying less of a game than those who did. Hopefully you guys agree with my list but please leave a positive or negative response below and please share with anyone you think would enjoy this list.
