10 Video Game Trends We Wish Would Disappear

8. Loading Screens

8-Loading-Screens

I'm not an idiot, I know that games need to load. The larger levels (or massive open world areas) combined with increased graphics have lead to the need to load more data whenever a new area is entered, which in turn has lead to increased loading times. Some games hide these loading times with cut-scenes some (such as Gears of War) hide these with extended periods of slow walking, but the absolute worst offenders are games which rely heavily on loading screens. Skyrim is one such offender, with infuriatingly long loading screens accompanying ever new session and every trip back into the open world. The one thing that redeems Skyrim is that once in the outside world there are no loading screens as you explore the map (as long as you don't venture inside or underground). Loading times detract from the overall experience and can be as jarring and disruptive as a poorly designed menu or a sudden break in character.
