Along with Resident Evil 4, the original Gears of War helped shift the tide in third-person gaming forever. But more so with the original Gears in 2006, it ensured that if companies weren’t churning out Call of Duty clones, they were sure trying to eat the lunch of Epic.

Gears cost Microsoft an insane 10 million dollars to develop, and another billion on top to double the amount of RAM in each Xbox 360. This choice ultimately solidified the 360’s dominance for most of the generation, as Epic needed to pull some tricks to get their game running.

Still pushing the 360 to its limits in the early day, developers had to limit the number of enemies on-screen to a measly four. Yes, that’s right, four! All those epic firefights that seemed to be against an entire army of Locust was just four grunts taking it, in turn, to come out of a hole and fight.

Thanks to the pacing and structure of encounters, it was never really an issue. Going back now it does feel underwhelming, but at least the cover-based shooting holds up. Oh, and there is always the Ultimate Edition if players did fancy a few more enemies to kill.
