10 Video Game True Endings That Insulted Players
5. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
The Metal Gear franchise always goes to great lengths to surprise players. Half melodrama, half Hideo Kojima-driven eccentricity, fans never quite know what to expect.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is well-known for its tricky ending(s). For instance, there’s the secret disarmament ending cutscene that plays when all the players on a platform disarm every nuke (which finally happened on PlayStation 3 in July 2020, though the number has risen again since).
Perhaps more importantly, though, the true ending is darn tough to unlock. Episode 46 requires the completion of an array of tricky missions, with few stones able to be left unturned. When it comes to dedication, however, Metal Gear fans are hard to beat, and many made it happen.
The reward? The revelation that the protagonist is not actually Big Boss at all, but the medic previously seen in Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. What a decision to make to close out what would be the series’ swansong (at least as far as Kojima’s concerned).
The notion of what it means to 'become' Big Boss has been hotly debated since, and this just left the vast majority of people confused.
