In 2017, it seems rather novel that a twist could amount to: "You were a girl all along".

Whereas most postmodern games tend to unleash the revelation that the player was actually the villain of the piece, the original Metroid created one of the industry’s most iconic characters, simply by revealing that Samus Aran had been packing the opposite set of genitals underneath her suit of armour.

The entire game was constructed to pull the wool over the player’s eyes. In Metroid’s English instruction manual (they still existed back in 1986), Samus was even referred to as a ‘he’, and Aran’s true gender identity was only revealed if the player completed Metroid in less than five hours.

Although she might have made a splash by stripping off and posing in her underwear, Samus will forever live on as one of the first and most memorable female video game characters in history, and her infamous ‘reveal’ serves as a reminder of just how far the industry has come in thirty years.
