10 Video Game Twists We Never Saw Coming
9. Red Dead Redemption
Red Dead Redemption is a game that could theoretically end several times, and arguably etches out its ‘true’ ending through a series of extended prologues.
Throughout the game’s runtime, John Marston watches the world as he once knew it transform from one of bandits and outlaws to one of bankers and businessmen. In order to pay off his own criminal record, he is tasked with tracking down his former gang members and putting them down.
So, when Marston finally gets to retire with his wife and son, we’re led to believe all’s well. In fact, things start to get a little tedious, as all that’s left to do in the game is menial ranch chores.
That is, until the lawmen come a knocking. It turns out the Bureau of Investigation weren’t to be trusted; they betray Marston, surrounding his farm and opening fire.
Although it’s possible for John to take a few of them down with him, the lawmen ultimately leave him bloodied and riddled with holes. It’s a bold move, to render a player’s entire game time effectively fruitless for the sake of a dramatic punchline, but it works exceptionally well in Red Dead.
