10 Video Game Twists We Never Saw Coming
4. Deadly Premonition
In a game that’s practically built upon twists, it’s hard to pin down which ones are more unpredictable than others.
Firstly, there’s the Raincoat Killer, the mysterious hooded figure who seems to have been terrorising the residents of Greenvale since the 1950s. Most think him a legend, but his true identity is revealed to be George Woodman, Greenvale’s sheriff, son of creepy gas mask-wearing Harry Stewart, grandson of the original Raincoat Killer from the 50s.
Then we have our protagonist, Francis York Morgan. Throughout Deadly Premonition, he’s seen talking to an alter ego called Zach, which the townsfolk tend to ignore, and players probably brush off as one of the game’s many references to Twin Peaks.
But York is actually Zach – York was Zach’s imaginary friend as a boy, but they ended up psychologically trading places when Zach’s mother was killed by the game’s true antagonist, Forrest Kaysen.
That’s right, the game’s dumpy, overweight tree salesman and comic relief character was behind the majority of killings; George Woodman had simply been a copycat with emotional trauma.
Kaysen was actually an emissary from an alternate dimension, who used his guise as a tree salesman to spread evil red seeds throughout Greenvale, seeds which drove the townspeople crazy.
Makes sense.
