The global battle between the human race and the alien species known as the Chimera can be viewed as an underdog battle in its own right. With the final instalment of the trilogy, it seems as if the Chimera have won. They would have, if new protagonist, and genuine underdog, Joseph Capelli didn't have anything to say about it.

Resistance 3 begins in the aftermath of past entries, which have resulted in both the death of original protagonist Nathan Hale - by Capelli's hand no less - and Earth succumbing to Chimeran forces.

What little settlements of humanity remain are quickly attacked by the Chimera, as they plan to terraform the planet entirely to house their species. Capelli, who now has a wife and child, just wants to survive, with his former days as a Sentinel behind him.

With the Chimera showing no plans of stopping until all of humanity is wiped out, Capelli is forced back into action to try and make a better world for his family. Once he takes up arms again, the various locations he traverses force the feeling of being an underdog onto the player, as it genuinely appears that he is outmatched by every Chimeran threat.

Eventually, Capelli and his team are able to expel the threat of the Chimera for good. As humanity closes in on the remnants of the alien force by the game's end, Capelli finally finds inner peace, overcoming literally impossible odds to secure his family's future.
