10 Video Game Underdogs That Defied All Odds
7. The Courier (Fallout: New Vegas)
Games, for the most part, have winners and losers, the odds of which can sway in favour of one side or the other. Coincidentally, the odds of Fallout: New Vegas's protagonist rising from underdog to someone with immense choice and power were definitely in his favour.
As a spin-off entry in the Fallout franchise, the game took place in a remade land known as New Vegas, in the aftermath of the Great War of 2077. The player is a Courier, who is initially tasked with the delivery of a mysterious MacGuffin named the Platinum Chip.
As the character starts his journey, he is ambushed by a mobster known as Benny, who subsequently shoots the Courier, leaves the character for dead, and steals the Chip.
The rest of the game sees the Courier not only recovering, but going on a series of events to take revenge against Benny, while retrieving what was stolen. Eventually, Benny is killed, and the Courier is given immense power by the end of the game.
They essentially decide the fate of New Vegas, which can see them helping one faction's vision, or implementing their own entirely.
The game may have began as a simple 'wrong place, wrong time' scenario, at the cost of the Courier's mission. That wasn't enough to keep the character down, however, as they eventually fought against an enemy force, before ultimately seizing power as they saw fit.
