10 Video Game Unlocks Nobody Could Afford
5. Everything - Achaea, Dreams Of Divine Lands (1997)
Originally released by developers Iron Realm Entertainment back in 1997, Achaea, Dreams Of Divine Lands is one of the largest MUDs still in existence. Set within an expansive world inspired by Greek mythology, players have the freedom to interact with the world however they wish within this text-based RPG.
Alongside being one of the largest examples of its genre, Achaea is one of the first known games to use microtransactions by allowing players to use real money to purchase credits which could be redeemed to acquire special items. Doing so, though, doesn't come cheap.
Gauntlets that increase a character's strength, for example, come at the hefty price point of $579.99. Coming in at a more expensive $712.50 is a hood that allows players to track enemies. More infamously, a pair of stockings that can be hung in a character's home are $634.95.
While it's possible to earn credits with gold by playing the game normally, obtaining the required wealth will take hundreds upon hundreds of hours to achieve, meaning that even the most dedicated player will struggle to raise the funds.
What makes these prices even more ridiculous is that players are paying hundreds just for a bit of text on their screen.
