Much like Traya, Metal Gear Solid 2's Solidus Snake strove to free humanity from a form of control, but ultimately went about it in a questionable - and yes, violent - way.

Solidus' aim was to eliminate the shadowy world-controlling force known as The Patriots, all in the hope of giving personal freedoms back to citizens.

Granted, he murdered protagonist Raiden's parents and freely made use of child soldiers, but given the hand he was dealt in life - being created by the Patriots as the third clone of Big Boss and all - it's easy to appreciate why he's a little screwed up.

Still, his vision for a world no longer ruled by the iron fist of a mysterious organisation was an appealing one, all things considered, and pretty much everything he feared would come to pass eventually did, so you can't even call him paranoid.
