In Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, players take on the role of devout shinobi Wolf as he fights to save his master, Lord Kuro, from the Ashina clan’s commander alongside finding a means of curing him of his affliction.

Players will use stealth and fast-paced sword combat to fight through waves of soldiers and battle powerful bosses along the way to achieve this goal. If players decide not to betray Kuro in the canonically bad Shura ending, they'll continue their quest and eventually defeat the clan’s patriarch, consequently saving Kuro.

With the threat to the young lord thwarted, players will feel like they’ve saved the day. However, Wolf’s actions only doom the lands of Ashina.

In the background of Wolf’s ongoing battle, Ashina is being invaded by the warring Interior Ministry, with this war acting as the catalyst for the rest of the game.

By slaughtering Ashina’s soldiers to reach Kuro, players have inadvertently weakened the castle’s defences. Returning to the area during a later point in the game shows that the Ministry’s forces have laid siege to the castle.

With Ashina’s leader gone, the Ministry is free to take over unopposed, and it is partly Wolf’s fault.
