Gaunter O’Dimm is the mysterious and highly charismatic antagonist of the Witcher 3’s Heart of Stone DLC.

Although he poses as a humble merchant, he is actually an ancient demon who makes deals with mortals in exchange for their souls. In the DLC, Geralt gets to stop Gaunter from consuming the life of his most recent client, Olgierd, but here’s the thing: cancelling the contract is actually just as beneficial for the demon.

If you choose to fight O’Dimm for Olgierd’s soul, you get to defeat him in his own game and then banish him back to where he came from. On the surface, it may look like the best-case scenario, but in reality, Gaunter still gets what he wants.

Although free, Olgierd has no perspectives left in life, having lost all his family and friends, meaning that he will likely still be miserable, much to Gaunter’s amusement.

More importantly, losing Olgierd’s contract means that the mirrors merchant can finally stop focusing on collecting the soul of his rebellious debtor and move on to terrorizing other people.

The situation is a win-win for Gaunter no matter what. The only difference is whether he gets to eat an additional soul… and if Geralt will get a new, powerful nemesis.
