10 Video Game Villains With The WORST Motivations

3. Bowser - Super Mario Odyssey

Bowser's seemingly annual capture of Princess Peach is perhaps the most overused cliche in video games, and though Super Mario Odyssey is an excellent game throughout, Mario's mission to save the princess somehow feels even more ridiculous this time around as a result.

Peach has always been Bowser's ultimate elusive prize, but the player is so rarely given a reason as to why his relentless efforts to capture the princess occur.

It's not something we ever truly needed to know, and after Super Mario Odyssey presents Bowser in a dapper wedding outfit, intending to forcefully marry the princess, his motivations surely aren't at the top of any gamers' Christmas list moving forward.

Saving the princess is an overused trope in storytelling, and our cries to make Mario's crusade the result of a different catastrophe were blatantly ignored in the production of Mario's 3D debut on the Nintendo Switch. It's a shame given how Mario is the poster child, not only of Nintendo, but arguably gaming as a whole.

Logic and rationality surely aren't something that is expected of Super Mario titles, but this villainous motivation somehow still managed to be a step in the wrong direction.
