10 Video Game Villains With The WORST Motivations

4. Mathias - Tomb Raider (2013)

You'll be forgiven for not remembering Mathias and his inclusion in 2013's Tomb Raider reboot, as his characterisation was one of the few blemishes on an otherwise superb experience.

The leader of the Solarii Brotherhood, Mathias was stranded on the island of Yamatai some 30 years prior to the events of the game. After attempts to leave the island, Mathias became a devout follower of Queen Himiko, the Sun Queen and last ruler of Yamatai.

Believing himself to be working towards the resurrection of Himiko, Mathias' villainous motivation is to transfer Queen Himiko's soul into Lara's friend Sam's body, as Sam is a descendant of the people of Yamatai. His intentions are fitting of a man who has been stranded on a hostile island for so long, as all rationality seems to have gone out the window.

The promise of departure from the island was enough for Mathias to blindly believe such kooky tales, and his susceptibility towards indoctrination was developed over three decades of solitude.

But it doesn't erase the fact that luring a twenty-something woman to her death in the hope of revitalising an ancient Sun Queen is just a bit ridiculous.

Fan of ducks, ice tea and escapism. Spends much of his time persistently saying 'I have so much studying to do' before watching Zoey 101 for the millionth time. Thinks Uncharted 3 is the best one.
