10 Video Games Cancelled Before Their Time
9. World Of Darkness
If you haven’t heard of World of Darkness it may be because you’re not too across tabletop RPGs but for those in the know, it’s an incredible lore-rich and deep roleplaying universe that lends itself perfectly to the video game medium.
While we have a handful of excellent vampy video games at our disposal including Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, Vapyr, V Rising, but this is one that could have easily risen to the top of the blood-sucking pack but was instead left in the dust like a vamp in the sun.
The developers of EVE Online, CCP, were all set to launch heavily into the, well, world of darkness, a supernatural-riddled alternate modern reality where creatures like vampires and werewolves occupy the same spaces as humans. Renowned for its deep writing, complex lore, and various cults with wildly unique characteristics, it seemed primed for a fantastic gaming experience.
Despite releasing a compelling concept art trailer that dazzled fans of the franchise, a huge round of layoffs at CCP Atlanta in addition to the merging of CCP and White Wolf quickly lead to development crises, staff upheaval and restructuring, general disorganisation, and a lack of focus. Even after a decade so little of the core game was established and the gameplay fell closer to Assassin’s Creed than a compelling roleplaying game.
An absence of clear vision and game direction unfortunately shot the project in the foot before it even had the chance to get off the ground.
