8. Halo 4

It's difficult to criticise Halo 4 without sounding like a nitpicker. While analysing the graphics, gunplay, animations, and pacing individually, it's tough to find fault. The campaign is tightly packed and demonstrates a tremendous variety in gameplay. The development between Master Chief and Cortana's relationship deserves special mention, since their deep bond serves as the heart of the overarching narrative.

So, what's the problem? Well, Halo had been, up until this point, a franchise that managed to outdo itself over and over. But this time around, it felt like the the bar had not been raised.

For example, the music in Halo 4 is fine. But because the scores of the previous three instalments were groundbreaking, "fine" just wasn't good enough.

One of the defining features of the series is the visual design. Unfortunately, Halo 4 traded the iconic, alien landscapes for more typical sci-fi environments, reducing the visual charm that Xbox owners have come to expect.

The core gameplay felt overly familiar, lacking the freshness that characterised earlier titles. The multiplayer mode was lacklustre, due to the uninspired maps and unbalanced gameplay mechanics.

Although Halo has been revolutionary since day 1, Halo 4 didn't bring a lot to the table.
