7. Doom 3

Doom 3 received a Metacritic score of 88%, with reviews applauding its lifelike graphics, tense atmosphere, and focus on story.

However, many gamers had such an aversion to this threequel, it sounded like they were complaining about a completely different IP.

Players find it frustrating how our hero is unable to hold his weapon and his flashlight simultaneously. Because of this, the player often has to decide between being armed or being able to see. This mechanic is extra irritating, since nearly every level is shrouded in darkness. Gamers spend so much time whipping out and putting away their torch, it ruins the immersion.

But Doom 3's biggest problem is the fact it doesn't feel like Doom. Rather than encouraging the player to explore in an open-world, this instalment has a relatively linear level design.

Doom has always benefitted from its minimal structure, since it amplifies the chaos when the player encounters demons from all directions. But since Doom 3 has the protagonist following a set path, the unpredictable element is absent.

Even though critics were onboard with Doom 3, id Software took fans' criticism onboard, going back to basics for the follow-up.
