4. Aliens: Colonial Marines Blows Its Massive Potential

Aliens: Colonial Marines was one of the most anticipated games of 2013, a gorgeous-looking, visceral shooter that appeared to have captured the style and tone of James Cameron's Aliens perfectly. However, fans were shocked when the reviews came pouring in, and it turned out that Colonial Marines was yet another bungled attempt to bring the Xenomorphs to our screens. The complaints were vocal and numerous: a high number of bugs ruined a lot of the fun, the Xenomorphs were just too easy to kill (completely muting any notion of suspense the game might've had), the AI sucked, the graphics were just OK, the cut-scene videos looked laughably dated, and the game was far too short. Following the negative reception, it was revealed that developers Gearbox Software ended up allocating many of their resources to Borderlands 2 instead of working on Colonial Marines, while delegating the actual work on the game to three companies, Demiurge Studios, Nerve Software and TimeGate Studios. As a result, Colonial Marines isn't just a failure of game design, but also on general project management and resource allocation. On the other hand, at least Borderlands 2 ended up being awesome...
