3. Mass Effect 3's Ending Insults Gamers Everywhere

Mass Effect was without question one of the most anticipated video game sequels in history, as Commander Shepard sought to take down Cerberus and the Reapers once and for all. For 99.8% of its play-time, Mass Effect 3 was an exhilarating, exciting finale to Shepard's story, albeit one that fell at the very last hurdle, as it unveiled an ending that completely betrayed the promise that our decisions made throughout the series would come home to roost at the end. Instead, we got to pick from three colours, and that was it. The fan backlash was unlike anything the medium had ever seen, as fans angrily demanded that BioWare fix an ending that was loaded with plot holes and simply not at all satisfying. Three months later, BioWare released a free "Extended Cut" ending for the game which greater demonstrated the impact of the player's choice throughout the universe and also sought to close some of the plot holes. Reception to this fix was positive, though it's still far away from what we as fans expected from BioWare, and it made a clear point to developers: don't try and short-change gamers and hope we're just going to go quietly into the night...
