10 Video Games Everyone Loves To Hate (That Totally Don't Deserve It)
9. DmC: Devil May Cry
The Consensus: "What did they do to my Dante?!" ,"He looks like hipster A-hole"
The Truth: Give a landmark franchise to a new developer and interesting things will always happen. In DmC's case, it meant taking everything we knew and loved about the demon-slaying Dante and 'modernising' him.
Dante's attitude was now less slick, action hero one-liner and more casual, high school hot guy. Ninja Theory tried to give him the whole "I don't care what you think, I'm gorgeous" attitude that should have made the ladies swoon, but that's one hell of a tightrope to walk when you're redesigning his entire aesthetic in the process.
As such, people hated the fact he no longer had white hair and a red trenchcoat - a fact the devs poked fun at by having Dante try a white wig during the intro segment and state, "Not in a million years."
Get past that though, see what they were aiming for, and you have a third-person hack n' slash with some of the most perfected combat in years. Ninja Theory know exactly how to deliver a power fantasy with a mix of alternate weapons you can swap in mid-combo, and it takes place on some of the most inventive level design this side of a Nintendo game (literally, you run through the polygonated version of a Fox News segment at one point).
DmC is the embodiment of a hidden gem - if said gem was shaped like a middle finger.
