7. Dying Light
From developers Techland, famous for their Dead Island series, comes Dying Light. The open world of Dying Light puts the player into the unenviable situation of surviving a zombie apocalypse. But where Dead Island let you roam its enormous open environments with only the zombies and floaters to worry about, Dying Light is not so kind. Because once the sun goes down, things get a bit more complicated. During the day, the zombies act as you would expect. Slow, shambling masses of moaning corpses. Easy to avoid if you just run, right? Well, when the night comes, they take a page out of the modern zombie book and will sprint after you like a bat out of hell. This Minecraft approach to the zombie world is very exciting, and grants the developers an extra bit of tension to work with. By drilling it into the head of the player that the sun going down is a thing to fear, you completely change the whole dynamic of the game into something much more terrifying. Aside from these new innovations, Dying Light also offers tremendous improvement to the Dead Island combat system. The weapon strikes have weight, and every zombie you decapitate feels very real. Not only that, but the gigantic open world is absolutely stunning to look at. The dynamic day and night system, along with some handsome weather effects, create a living, breathing world. Be prepared to go back to your zombie killing ways, as Dying Light is poised for PC and next-gen consoles this year.
