Final Fantasy IX takes the player to some very morose places. The concepts of life, death and grief are closely examined in the game, and it’s heavy-going in places. Nonetheless, with its storybook aesthetic and comical vibe, it’s one of the most wholesome titles in the series.

Who couldn’t identity with the plight of fan-favorite Vivi Ornitier, the plucky little black mage who just wanted to belong, to live his life on his own terms? He’s one of the franchise’s most popular characters, because his struggle was so fantastical yet so relatable.

Some players won’t know, however, that’s there’s a very sinister little truth about his past life that is hidden away in an optional area.

When gamers meet Quina and Master Quale, Vivi states that the Qu tribe members look exactly like his adoptive grandfather, Quan. Vivi speaks highly of Quan over the course of their adventure, but when the player reaches Quan’s Dwelling (hidden away in the mountains near Treno), they discover something startling.

A message on the wall where Quan marked Vivi’s height reveals the dark truth about why he’d been raising him: "Six weeks since I adopted Vivi. Still too small to eat.”
