8. Paladins - Terminus’ Horrible Origins
Paladins, much like Overwatch, is a hero shooter featuring larger-than-life characters, bold visuals and a huge array of hilarious skills, melodramatic powers and other cartoony brilliance.
In another parallel to Blizzard's hero shooter, there’s precious little in the way
of single player content. Without a campaign to elaborate on just who these
characters are, why they’re fighting and such, those who don’t trouble to dive
into the lore will miss out on a wealth of interesting and surprisingly
horrific details.
As far as the latter goes, Terminus is an especially horrifying case study. This Front Line (tank) character is a melee powerhouse with his Massacre Axe, and he’s also Undead. What’s this terrifying character’s backstory? Take it away, Paladins:
“Whatever Terminus once was, he has since become an instrument of war fighting on behalf of the Magistrate. His mind and memories are long gone, his broken body bound by dark sorcery and unstable magic crystals. His form, stuck somewhere between life and death, may be a mere shadow of his former self, but it has also rid him of hesitation and fear.”
To make matters worse, his ultimate ability, Reanimate, allows him to revive himself, but he’s desperate not to do so.
“Please… let me die… No! No,” he sometimes howls on activating it.
