10 Video Games It's Cool To Hate

9. Death Stranding

Death Stranding generated all kinds of interest prior to its release. That was an inevitability, really, what with it being Hideo Kojima’s first big release after… whatever it was that transpired between the gaming icon and Konami.

Kojima is well known for his eccentric ways and even more eccentric games (if you have any experience with the Metal Gear Solid series, you’ll know what we mean), and with his cryptic social media posts and such, gamers were intrigued to get their hands on his latest project.

Many of us were unsure what exactly we were looking at prior to launch. Some have played all the way through Death Stranding multiple times since release and still can’t make head nor tail of it. The journey of Sam Porter Bridges (a courier tasked with making deliveries to a series of separate colonies) is a truly unique experience, though the great weight of expectation meant some were bound to be disappointed. Unfairly or not, it was impossible for Kojima to truly win here.

It's a very unconventional game, as it was always going to be, but those hoping for a Metal Gear spiritual sequel got anything but. The game is often derided as a 'walking simulator,' devoid of the bombastic action Kojima has become known for. Those who were unimpressed also point to the surreal and confusing nature of it all, a pretentious leaning that makes things seem much more arty and sophisticated than they really turned out to be.
