10 Video Games Released At The Wrong Time
8. SiN
SiN is, in another timeline, the definitive first-person shooter from which all 21st Century shooters were built off. Unfortunately for SiN in this timeline though, it came out the same month as Half Life, which itself provided the building blocks for all shooters after.
Both SiN and Half Life introduced some new ideas to the genre, but Half Life was much slicker. While SiN’s innovations were more along the lines of ‘oh yeah, that’s new’, Half Life’s were actually fun to play.
SiN is comparable in that regard to Ang Lee’s recent movie, Billy Lynn’s Half Time Walk. It was the first movie to be shot entirely in 120fps with native 4k rendering, something which will likely become the norm in the future. It’s a great development for the industry, but it’s not really going to make you rush out to see Billy Lynn, is it?
In the same vein, ‘ooh, you can knock the gun out of an enemy’s hand’ is hardly a selling point, inventive as it was. The same goes for limb-specific damage.
Mainly though, as it was hurried out to beat Half Life to shelves, SiN was weighed down by exceedingly long load times and game-breaking bugs.
