10 Video Games Stuck In Development The Longest
8. Diablo III
Diablo II was released in the summer of 2000 and David Brevik and Erich Schaefer's creation remains a defining moment in the history of the Action RPG genre. On the back of its standing as a solid sequel to its predecessor, development for a third Diablo title was always going to be on the cards.
Development for Diablo III began in 2001 quickly after the release of its predecessor but it would take over a decade for it to actually reach the shelves.
The game wasn't even announced by Blizzard until the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in 2008, but a variety of technical challenges and priorities elsewhere around the company meant that development progress would be slow.
Diablo III would eventually be released for Windows in May 2012.
What's more, in 2012 it was revealed that Diablo III would be making a jump to consoles, with the PS3 and Xbox 360 getting their copy in September 2013, PS4 and Xbox One in August 2014 and Nintendo Switch in November 2018.
