10 Video Games That Actually Taught Us Something Useful

4. Civilization - Political Relations

It's said that the politics of centuries past is always going to be analogous to the politics of today, because human nature does inherently not change, and going by the gameplay mechanics of the Civilization games, that seems to be absolutely on the money. The series allows you to build your own empire from the ground-up, going from a small settlement to a mighty superpower feared the world over. What's really great though, is the freedom the game promotes; you can just try and destroy your "enemies", or you can try to move human society forward, while being faced with the various economic and environmental issues that politicians are faced with in real life. It's a game that explains in comprehensive yet easily digestible detail the various checks and balances that are required to make any country run properly, and the various aspirations that have to be considered on all sides. Though not for everyone, the Civ games are perfect for anyone who wants to know a little more about history and politics while also allowing you to kick some butt at the same time.
