10 Video Games That Are Barely Recognisable Today
5. Yakuza 1 - Yakuza 7: Like A Dragon
When I think of the Yakuza games, my mind often wanders to the charming image of a person being beaten to a pulp with a BMX. It’s an insane picture that sums up what this game is about - over the top events, random violence and a sense that the games truly capture the insanity of the movie genre of the same name, on which they drew inspiration from.
As the series has continued, the over the top scenarios and melodrama have only been dialled up, and yet the developers at Sega were always looking to push what could be done in their games. Which leads us to Yakuza: Like A Dragon, the newest addition to the core series of games.
While this might look like it’s ticking all the boxes of the franchise, telling a story of a man who took the fall for his crime family and who have now abandoned him, there’s something very very different when it comes to the combat. Namely that it’s turn based!
The dev team stated they wanted to try something new, which has to be commended when continuing such a long-running tally of games, but bloody hell does this immediately give the game a different vibe.
Combat is a very core part of the games and its shakeup has left some fans excited, while others are now totally adrift, leading to speculation that the game has lost the Yakuza “identity”. Only time will tell.
