10 Video Games That Are Better When You Break Them

9. Super Smash Bros. Melee

2001's Super Smash Bros Melee was a brilliant party fighter that brought together a solid roster of Nintendo characters to duke it out in four player, manic action. It rightfully has the honour of placing first in the list of best selling GameCube titles. However, as with any game, players moved on with the next console and the next iteration in the series... right?

Whilst that might've been true for a more casual audience, Melee's most dedicated fans refused to let it go. For some, it had transformed from a silly, chaotic brawl-for-all into a fiendishly competitive fighting game. In large part, this was due to the discovery of wavedashing.

This shield-cancelling movement technique allowed for Melee players to kick themselves into sixth gear, turning the game into a tense, speedy battler like no other. It also led to a slew of other discoveries that were absolutely not intended but changed the flow of the game completely.

The "casual versus competitive" debate in Smash lasted for years but it can't be argued that the new techs gave the game a much longer relevancy.

Whilst it wasn't there every year, Melee maintained a part of the line-up of EVO, video gaming's biggest fighting game tournament showcase, until 2019.
