10 Video Games That Are Far Creepier Than They Look
4. The Tomb Raider Series - The Awfully Alarming Atlanteans
The Tomb Raider titles aren’t the most family-friendly, it’s true. Our poor heroine Lara Croft can perish in all kinds of grisly ways during her adventures, from being shot to impaling and plummeting off of cliffs. It’s just par from the course when you’re an Indiana Jones-esque raider of tombs.
Grisly, yes, but creepy isn’t territory that the games are known to venture into. They certainly do, though, as the Atlanteans make clear.
These hideous creatures would give H.P. Lovecraft and Tim Burton nightmares. With their lack of flesh and vicious teeth, they seem somewhat out of place in the series titles they appear in (Tomb Raider: Anniversary and Tomb Raider: Unfinished Business among them).
Their power and resilience makes them foes that are horrifying to encounter for more reasons than one. The pinnacle of ghastliness is the Giant Atlantean in the original title (Abomination in the Anniversary edition), a formidable boss battle Lara faces in The Great Pyramid.
