10 Video Games That Caused Physical Injuries
7. Oculus Quest 2
Virtual reality itself is obviously very prone to numerous potential injuries. Just by the very nature of having your eyes covered, users are putting themselves in increased danger compared to your regular video game.
There's also the nature of having a screen strapped to your head and whilst studies show that being close to a display doesn't necessarily cause adverse effects, it entirely depends on the type. For example, the bright red world of Nintendo's monstrosity the Virtual Boy was reported to have caused headaches that were not worth the games available to play.
Facebook's Oculus Quest 2 also came under fire last year with the European Commission, who found traces of potentially harmful substances in the peripheral. Specifically, there were skin and eye irritants in the foam that cushions the VR unit onto your skin and around your eyes. Not the best place to have them, basically.
Oculus' findings said that it affected 0.01% of users. Studies showed that 45% of those affected needed medical attention for rashes, swelling and hives. Not the best free gifts to come with your $400 VR machine...
Facebook paused sales of the device to produce a silicone cover for the foam, and sank the costs as they made them available for free to anyone who voluntarily opted for one.
