10 Video Games That Didn't End The Way Any Of Us Wanted
1. The Quarry
A great thing about writing these lists is that I can collect a bunch of infamously poor endings, lesser known unpopular endings, and also throw in some personal gripes of times I felt ripped off by an ending. This entry is that.
While The Quarry developer Supermassive Games is responsible for some of the most fascinating storytelling in the medium, especially the horror genre, their 2022 effort left a lot to be desired for most players once they reached the end of the game’s 9 hour runtime.
While there are absolutely some interesting ideas at play in The Quarry, and a handful of varied albeit somewhat forgettable characters, the ball is only really dropped at the end. The horror adventure hurtles toward its conclusion and no matter how many of its characters you save or what decisions you make, there’s no actual final chapter or epilogue.
Bizarrely, things wrap up with some flavour text telling you where each character left off and then an agonisingly delivered podcast commenting on the findings of the game.
All that plus a replay system that doesn’t let you skip dialogue, a system where you could pay real money to roll back a decision, and an unfinished feeling left a poor taste in your mouth even if you were enjoying this one for the rest of its duration.
