8. The Flood Return - Halo 3
Halo 3 gives poor Master Chief enough to test his blood pressure, what with the Earth being under siege by the Covenant, the UNSC being firmly on their back foot, and now he has to trust The Arbiter, the guy who's been trying to murder him up until this moment. The last thing John needs right now is a rematch with the eldritch Flood with the already ravaged Earth as the battlefield.
So anyway, the Flood crash land on Earth.
Just when it looks like the UNSC is about to get a leg up on the Covenant, the ship containing the last Flood hive crashes down onto Earth and immediately goes to work expanding across the planet. Things are already bad enough, so seeing this sends your heart crashing down into your stomach. It's about as perfect a "things just got somehow worse" moment as this series has done, and this is the same series that gave us Halo Reach.
