10 Video Games That Ignored The Industry (And Became TIMELESS)
9. Hades
Hades represented quite the departure for developer Supergiant Games, whose previous games Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre were more story-driven, linear experiences.
Hades, however, was a roguelike with procedurally generated levels, and released at a time where the market for roguelikes was beginning to become too crowded for its own good, and procedural generation was no longer a sexy buzzword.
Plus, Supergiant dared to release Hades in early access - a release model which came with its own set of stigmas and assumptions from players.
But the developer stayed on their path and followed through to the full retail release, where Hades received rave reviews for its ultimately innovative take on the roguelike formula, as well as its unexpectedly nuanced narrative, sublime art direction, and brilliant music and voice acting.
Despite many initially believing that it arrived late to a party that was already winding down, Hades sold 700,000 copies in early access, and this figure soared to 1 million within three days of its full launch.
