10 Video Games That Jumped To Other Systems During Development
7. Mother 3
As the title that spawned both Lucas and Ness in Nintendo's Smash Bros, Mother (known as Earthbound to English-speaking audiences) has gone by unnoticed by many a gamer. Initially it was only released in Japan, but came to the US after massive fan demand.
It's a deep and thought-provoking RPG trilogy, but when the third entry was in production, there were some serious roadblocks along the way. Initially, development kicked off on the Super Famicom, but got bumped to the Nintendo 64 in the nineties. Brownie Brown and HAL Laboratory wanted to create an ambitious 3D environment, but this too would prove to be complicated.
Both the Nintendo 64's cartridges and disc drives were both dropped and many began to speculate if the game had been cancelled. By the time Mother 3 finally arrived in 2006, it had taken twelve years and two console generations. In fact, it wasn't a console release at all, as the final game in the series came to the Game Boy Advance.
While it was agreed by many that Mother 3 was easily the GBA's best role-playing title, the extended period it spent underground had dampened the game's success somewhat. To this day, the Earthbound franchise hasn't had another sequel.
