10 Video Games That Jumped To Other Systems During Development
6. Aliens: Colonial Marines
Aliens is one of the most beloved sci-fi action flicks ever produced and its impact on video-gaming can be felt several decades after its release. Translating it to playable form has not always been so seamless though.
Following a couple of Alien vs Predator releases, an initial version of Colonial Marines was announced by Fox Interactive and EA as a 2002 shooter. It was set to come to PlayStation 2 at first but was cancelled for unknown reasons. Some suspect it was down to technical limitations, but nevertheless, the idea remained a dream project for the fanbase.
Further down the road however, Gearbox Software would pick up the license to Aliens and restart the game from scratch, promising to do the source material justice on new hardware. After many delays and rumoured cancellations, it landed on Xbox 360 and PS3 instead with SEGA serving as a publisher. After a full decade in gestation, many had high hopes that it would meet expectations.
As many of us know, the final game was catastrophically disappointing, with Gearbox seemingly hammering the game out the door with minimal effort and outsourcing production duties to other studios. Had the game's protracted development not been so long, another developer could have taken a more cohesive stab at it.
