10. Ethan Forrester - Telltale's Game Of Thrones

At various points over the course of Telltale's episodic Game of Thrones series, the player controls five main characters - four members of the northern House Forrester and also a member of the Night's Watch.

True to the HBO series' blood-lust, however, one of these five is actually brutally murdered at the end of the very first episode, with young Ethan Forrester being stabbed to death by Ramsay Bolton, all while the player is controlling him no less.

Furthermore, despite this being a Telltale game, there's no way for players to save Ethan - his demise is an instigating incident which propels the rest of the season.

And to make matters worse, Ramsay survives the events of the game and doesn't get his indirect comeuppance until several years later in the TV series.

Thankfully, fans still had four other characters to work with for the remainder of the "season", but this caught just about everybody off-guard regardless.
