6. Final Fantasy VII's Remake Is Not A Remake

Before 2015, fans were clamouring for a Final Fantasy VII remake. Over the past five years, they waited patiently for its April release, and the verdict has been pretty favourable overall. The decision to omit random encounters for more intense, flashy combat, as well as Midgar's stunning visuals, has rocketed the game into the 21st Century.

One downfall that becomes apparent once playing, however, is the story's plodding pacing. Small moments from the original are stretched into their own segments, with minor characters fitted with laborious backstories. In fact, the original FFVII’s first disc is the entire focus of the reboot. So why is the 2020 game entitled as a remake?

Tetsuya Nomura was clear in saying the remake is not a replacement for the original, and the twist ending seems to confirm that. The remake’s final moments tease that story events may be entirely different going forward, making future instalments technically not FFVII replicants at all but entirely new stories. Exciting!
