9. P.T. - Walking Down The Same Corridor Repeatedly

Doing the exact same thing over and over again can drive a person mad, even the most exciting activities lose their muster if you perform them continuously on a loop.

So when P.T. dropped and the entire gameplay loop is to walk down a corridor with a single corner repeatedly, you would never have guessed it would become one of the scariest experiences in gaming history.

The secret is how the player is never sure what to expect next. Initially, there are only subtle differences whenever you traverse the lone section of the house such as a radio turning on or doors previously shut being unlocked.

However, eventually, things gradually grow more frightening and deadly.

Panes of glass shatter, a bloody refrigerator swings from the rafters, and a deformed creature cries in a bathroom sink. Then Lisa is introduced and the objective of walking along the same stretch of corridor becomes a task you wish not to perform, not out of boredom, but fear.

Lisa can pop out of dozens of areas, standing ominously or shaking violently before attacking the player. It makes the simple act of going around the corner a chilling thought. A superb showcase of how a minimalist approach can be so effective.

It still stands as one of the most petrifying experiences of all time and yet all you do is walk a corridor.
