When it comes to games, fetch quests often find themselves at the bottom of the list of mission types gamers look forward too. You go to an area, find an item and then possibly have to bring it back to the starting position.

Slender: The Eight Pages is entirely devoted to this concept, having players wander an empty forest at night to find the titular pieces of paper. The paper doesn't even seem worth your time, being comprised entirely of crude drawings and simple, generic sentences.

However, the game has a ton of subtle mechanics going on to cause you to flee through the place in abject terror.

The game slowly rolls out tweaks to gameplay from choosing when you can sprint, the battery life of your torch, and the music methodically getting more intense the more pages you manage to find. Slenderman's movements are also carefully chosen in order to amplify the horror as much as possible.

You might just be wandering an empty landscape to find children's scribbles, but Slender is a lot smarter than it may seem and makes this boring mission structure a dramatic run for your life.
