There was a massive wave of open-world survival games this last decade and genre fatigue definitely set in. The gameplay loop of spending hours grinding to pillage supply caches, hunt for food, and keep all of your meters in check wasn't exactly the most thrilling of mechanics.

Most see this busywork as merely a necessity you need to push through in order to get to the good stuff, but there is one game that bent this loop brilliantly and gave players one hell of a horrific experience.

In the incredibly bizarre and captivating world, players are only allowed to leave their homes during the daytime. You must get as much done as quickly as possible, gathering materials and food in order for you to be able to build your defenses in your home. Once the sun goes down intruders will come knocking.

It's a mad dash to grab as much as you can before the night drops, where an even more tense ordeal will threaten you at the end of the day as your barricades and traps begin to crumble as the monsters come to your door.

If you don't get enough, it's likely you won't survive the horrors of nightfall, and it makes what is usually a horrendously slow-paced grind a completely terrifying sprint.
